Travel journal supplies: start with five things, not fifty
The easiest kit is small enough to use at a café table and simple enough to pack without turning your holiday into a craft project.
The five essentials

A small lay-flat journal
Choose A6 or A5. If you plan to glue in tickets and photos, a spiral or flexible binding handles the extra thickness better than a tight spine.

One dependable pen
Use a quick-drying black pen you already enjoy. A familiar pen is more useful than a large new set you are afraid to use.

A glue roller or glue stick
A tape-style glue roller is tidy on the road. A small acid-free glue stick is a simple alternative for paper keepsakes.

Small scissors
Pack them only when your airline and luggage rules allow it. Otherwise tear paper by hand during the trip and trim it after you return.

One flat storage pocket
Use an envelope, zip pouch or the journal back pocket to stop receipts, labels and tickets disappearing into your bag.
Optional, not essential
- Photo corners
- One roll of washi tape
- A small alphabet sticker sheet
- Two coloured pencils
- A date stamp
- A compact photo printer
Leave these at home
Skip large paper pads, ten rolls of tape, wet paint, duplicate pens and tools you have never used. Extra choice creates extra decisions. Add colour and polished layouts after the trip if that is the part you enjoy.
The goal on the road is to capture details before they disappear, not to finish a perfect scrapbook spread every night.
A simple packing rule
If the supplies do not fit in one small pouch, reduce them. Keep the journal, pen and storage envelope accessible during the trip. Keep cutting and decorating tools in checked luggage or use them after you return.
